North Carolina: Irene Kills Seven, Power Outages After Landfall 730 000 Carolina

At least seven people were killed in the Outer Banks of North Carolina was flooded, and over a million homes and businesses were without electricity for Hurricane Irene began its crash course in New York today.

Virginia and Washington area residents are still together after a magnitude 5.8 earthquake centered on Aug. 23 at Virginia and now must face the hurricane.

District of Columbia has distributed about 5,000 sandbags to residents at RFK Stadium on August 26, until they were gone, according to the site of the city. The city issued about 6,000 more before closing the distribution of 3:00 p.m. yesterday, after running out of sandbags.

Higher Ground

Irene made landfall near Cape Lookout, North Carolina, around 7:30 ET, with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph (140 kph), according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center. Flooding closed several main roads, has violated the treatment plants, waste water and fallen trees along the eastern part of the state, Gov. Bev Perdue said.

"There is extensive damage and infrastructure along the coast," Perdue said at a briefing at 06:00 New Raleigh.

Some utilities serving the area north of Maryland, Washington and Delaware, including Pepco Holdings Inc. (POM) of the Delmarva Power & Light and Constellation Baltimore Gas & Electric, said cuts quickly rise above 56 000 when storm passed through.
